The BC Libraries Cooperative (http://bc.libraries.coop/) seeks several Accessibility Testers for limited-term employment with the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS). Reporting to the Coordinator for Accessibility Testing, the Accessibility Testers will be responsible for evaluating library ebook reading applications as well as ebook files for accessibility following a defined set of criteria. These positions are excellent opportunities for individuals who are curious about EPUB accessibility and the challenges facing Canadian publishers that want to publish accessible ebooks.

The Accessibility Testers will be responsible for:

  • Working with fellow team members and the Accessible Reading Coordinator to evaluate mainstream library reading applications such as Overdrive, Libby, Zinio, and others, and then document and prioritize accessibility feature requests.
  • Working with fellow team members and the Accessible Reading Coordinator to evaluate publisher EPUB files for accessibility, and then document and prioritize suggestions for improvements.
  • Reporting on findings and help to write and assemble reports for library vendors, libraries, and book publishers.
  • Providing updates and reports as requested by the Accessible Reading Coordinator and NNELS staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

All training will be provided. This is a virtual office opportunity.

Requirements

The candidate must provide their own home office, internet connectivity and computer. The Co-op is a "bring your own device (BYOD)" work environment. Employees are required to supply their own computing equipment and ensure that the equipment is fit for the job.

Competencies and qualifications

  • Must have a print disability as defined by Canada’s Copyright Act and use one or more assistive technologies to read.
  • Must be familiar with ebook reading software and hardware.
  • Must be comfortable with technology and communicating via email.
  • Strong writing skills are required as the position requires extensive reporting on findings.
  • Knowledge of HTML5 and ARIA is an asset.
  • Being an avid ebook reader is an asset!

  • Start date 1 October, 2018 and ending March 31, 2019.
  • Salary: You may apply to work a full position covering both EPUB Testing and Library Reading App Testing for $30/hr for a total of 850 hours (approximately 32.5 hours/week). You may also apply for one component of this position: EPUB Testing  for $30/hour for a total of 560 hours (approximately 21.5 hours/week) or Library Reading App Testing for $30/hr for a total of 290 hours (approximately 11 hours/week).
