The BC Libraries Cooperative (http://bc.libraries.coop/) seeks a Coordinator for Accessibility Testing for a limited-term contract with the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS). Reporting to the Grant Project Coordinator, the Accessible Reading Coordinator will undertake an extensive review of accessibility of EPUB files and public library ebook reading platforms. The Coordinator will lead a team of 4 or more accessibility Testers in evaluating library reading applications as well as ebook files following a defined set of criteria, to be developed in conjunction with the Grant Project Coordinator and NNELS staff. The results of the review will be shared with Canadian public libraries, vendors, and communities interested in accessibility. This is an exciting opportunity to change the landscape of accessible reading.

The Coordinator for Accessibility Testing will be responsible for:

  • Designing accessibility evaluation criteria for publisher's ebook files (EPUB) from a usability perspective.
  • Designing accessibility evaluation criteria for library reading applications, such as Overdrive, Libby, Zinio, etc.
  • Leading a team of 4 Accessibility Testers with print disabilities who will carry out the evaluations on library reading applications and publisher ebook files.
  • Reviewing and editing final written evaluation reports produced by the Accessibility Testers.
  • Presenting findings of library reading app evaluations on the NNELS website for distribution to Canadian public libraries.
  • Providing regular written updates to the Communications Coordinator.
  • Documenting work and feedback for NNELS staff and other project teams to advance accessible publishing in Canada.
  • Participating in NNELS-wide discussions concerning accessible publishing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

All training will be provided. This is a virtual office opportunity.

Requirements

The candidate must provide their own home office, internet connectivity and computer. The Co-op is a "bring your own device (BYOD)" work environment. Employees are required to supply their own computing equipment and ensure that the equipment is fit for the job.

Competencies and qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Studies or a related field.
  • Experience working with others in a virtual work environment.
  • General understanding of perceptual (print) disabilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies.
  • Knowledge of ebooks, and ebook reading software and hardware.
  • Familiarity with accessibility conformance testing and accessibility standards, such as WCAG, is a definite asset.
  • Experience designing evaluation criteria is an asset.
  • Basic understanding of HTML5 is an asset.
  • Familiarity with editing content in the Drupal content management system is an asset.
