Reporting to the NNELS Project Manager, the Drupal Developer is responsible for enhancing the user experience of the nnels.ca web property.

NNELS is a digital public library of books in accessible formats for readers with print disabilities. When eligible people request books that do not yet exist in accessible formats, our job is to find existing copies or produce them. For more information about NNELS, please visit https://nnels.ca/about.

Specific tasks may include:

  • Developing an Advanced Search interface for the NNELS repository;
  • Implementing a Cover Art solution from a third-party vendor;
  • Setting up phpBB forums for our recording project;
  • Developing and deploying solutions to support member staff and end-users;
  • Documentation, troubleshooting, and bug fixes;
  • Working collaboratively with other developers in the Co-op and wider open source communities;
  • Other duties and projects as required.

All training will be provided. This is a virtual office opportunity.

  • Interested in the technical and legal aspects of producing and obtaining content in accessible formats;
  • Committed to improving the accessibility of public library collections and services across Canada.

The candidate must provide their own home office, internet connectivity and computer with a contemporary version of MS Office. The Co-op is a "bring your own device (BYOD)" work environment. Contractors are required to supply their own computing equipment and ensure that the equipment is fit for the job.

Competencies and qualifications:

  • On-the-job experience or education/coursework in Computing Science or a related field;
  • Demonstrated experience with Drupal 7;
  • Comfortable using version control (we use GitHub);

  • Open source software development;
  • Familiarity with MacOSX an asset;
  • Ability to manage stress (with a sense of humour);
  • Ability to work collaboratively and positively with individuals and groups in a distributed environment (team members do not all work in one location).

What we offer:

  • Flexibility. While the Co-op is headquartered in downtown Vancouver, this is a virtual office opportunity.
  • The opportunity to be part of an energetic, supportive, and dynamic team in a growing community enterprise.
  • Exciting opportunities to have a positive effect on library services and the lives of readers across the country.
  • This position is a limited-term employment opportunity.
  • Position will be for 35 hours per week, starting as early as January 15 and ending 31 March 2018.
