First Nations, Inuit and Métis Voices Project

The goal of this project is to create accessible Indigenous authored and narrated audiobooks.

Project Overview: 

The goal of this project is to create Indigenous authored and narrated accessible audiobooks.  To enable these productions this project is offering:

  • Portable recording kits sent to the narrator's home,

  • One on one training in recording and narration

  • Accessibility testers to evaluate and contribute to image descriptions

  • Standard audiobook narration wages

  • Publication of the finished audiobook as part of the NNELS repository (available to everyone with a print disability)

Recording Kit:

This kit is available to anyone that is participating in the program depending on availability.  It is available with or without the iPad, if the narrator needs a device to record onto. The instructions to using this kit can be found here: Recording Kit Instructions

  • 1 USB studio microphone
  • 1 iPad
  • 1 set of over ear headphones
  • Adaptors for use of microphone with PC, Mac, iPad and iPhone.

Training:

  • Training Videos 
  • Accessible Audiobook Production Guidelines
  • One on one training and support from our Audiobook Recording Projects Coordinator.  These sessions will be held over video call allowing for screen sharing to troubleshoot any issues that may come up for the narrator.
  • Guidance and support on best formatting practices and image descriptions.  NNELS has a team of accessibility testers that are able to assess and guide as needed.

Wages:

  • Narrator wages are $100 per finished audio hour. For a beginner this works out to be about $30 per hour, and for a more experienced narrator about $50 per hour. 

Publication:

  • The finished accessible audiobook will be published on the NNELS repository making the book available to anyone with a perceptual disability. To learn more about what constitutes a perceptual disability and the NNELS collections policy, read our Collections Policy
