What do library staff need to know about patron types?

Last updated: March 19, 2021

If your library has an established connector to your ILS, assign patrons with print disabilities to the agreed-upon patron or borrower type(s) in your local library card database. If you're not sure what that type is, please ask your regional NNELS contact or NNELS Support about how the ILS you use is set up. For more information about the ILS connectors and NNELS click here.

Once patrons have been assigned the correct patron type, they are able to log in with their library-issued credentials, usually barcode and PIN. NNELS appreciates local libraries providing cards that get users access to the alternate format materials that they need.

If you already keep track of print-disabled patrons by using a different patron type, please change their type to the one for NNELS access.

Please notify existing patrons with print disabilities about NNELS.
