The BC Libraries Cooperative (BCLC) is a mission-driven non-profit cooperative that helps libraries help people.
Our 200+ members include public and post-secondary libraries and institutions across Canada. We provide libraries and related organizations with the services, cost savings, and support they need to do great work in their communities. We provide several online services for our members which include a focus on using open-source technology and systems, as well as expanding work in the field of accessible publishing that supports people in Canada with print disabilities.

About the Role
The BCLC houses the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS) which is a digital library of books in accessible formats for readers with print disabilities. When people request books that do not yet exist in accessible formats, our job is to produce them. NNELS is funded by 8 provincial and territorial governments, as well as the federal government. The BC Libraries Cooperative (Co-op) seeks one full-time Training and Awareness Coordinator. The anticipated start date is March 2025 with an end date of March 31, 2027.
Reporting to the Grant Manager and working under the direction of the NNELS Manager, the Training and Awareness Coordinator will lead a team of Accessibility Experts, create resources focused on awareness, acquisition, and use of alternate format reading materials using a variety of assistive technology. This position will also be responsible for conducting live and virtual training sessions.
Responsibilities:
- Promote awareness of alternate formats and digital literacy through presentations, webinars, and outreach initiatives.
- Design, develop, assign, and oversee the successful completion of projects for a team with a broad and diverse range of skills, knowledge, and technical abilities;
- Work with team members in diverse ways to bring out their strengths; through troubleshooting, training, and having advanced discussions around accessibility and assistive technology;
- Review, edit, and make presentations utilizing training materials produced by the Accessibility Experts.
- Keep track of and reports on all project deliverables
- Work closely with accessibility experts to create engaging training materials, including presentations, guides, and online modules.
- Plan and conduct live and virtual training sessions for stakeholders, including libraries, publishers, educators, and other partners.
- Work in partnership with NNELS’ accessibility experts and coordinators, with input from the NNELS Manager, to ensure training aligns with organizational goals and industry standards.
- Contribute to the development of documentation, toolkits, and FAQs to support training, including resources for the PLARC project.
- Manage training schedules, registration, and arrangements for virtual and in-person training sessions.
- Evaluate training effectiveness through participant feedback and performance assessments.
- Work with colleagues on a social media and promotion plan and contribute material to promote training sessions.
- Stay current on emerging trends in alternate formats and assistive technologies and integrate them into training content.
Competencies and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies, social sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Clear understanding of perceptual (print) disabilities;
- Knowledge of the public library environment in Canada;
- Excellent organizational skills and time management with the ability to work on multiple concurrent projects with conflicting deadlines;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Experience writing and presenting training materials is an asset;
- Familiarity with assistive technology;
- Experience developing processes and best practices is an asset;
- Previous experience supervising staff or with in project management is an asset;
- Knowledge of ebooks, and ebook reading software;
- Ability to adapt and learn new technologies quickly;
- Ability to work and troubleshoot independently;
- Ability to work collaboratively and positively with individuals and groups in a distributed environment;
- Familiarity with accessibility conformance testing and accessibility standards, is an asset;
- Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in French and English is highly desirable.
Contract Terms
- Work location: remote (home based).
- This is a full-time, long-term contract with an anticipated start date of March 2025, and an end date of March 31, 2027.
- Contract will be for 35 hours per week.
- Rate: $41 per hour.
- There will be a 3-month probationary period for this role starting on the first date of employment.
- Position includes paid vacation and sick time.
- This position is grant funded.
Must provide own internet and computer. The Co-op operates as a "bring your own device" (BYOD) environment, requiring contractors and employees to supply and maintain their own suitable equipment.
