In Marlborough Sounds in the 1820s sixteen-year-old Lizzie is forced to become the child bride of a notorious whaler. Her life is a living hell, until she meets a young Maori preacher. In the present day Bel, also aged sixteen, is sent to a remote farm in the Sounds to avoid her parents' messy divorce, and the two girls' stories entwine across time.
