In 1088, one young knight, Hugh de Payens, is inducted into a secret society in his father's castle in Anjou. He is commanded by the Order to join the Crusade to redeem the Holy Land. Sickened by the slaughter of innocents, Hugh and a few of the brotherhood form a unique order of fighting monks to defend pilgrims on the road to Jerusalem.
