Jacques Roumain in his short but very productive life became one of Haiti's most important intellectuals. Before his death in 1944, at age 37, he had served as a pioneering journalist, an ethnographer who worked as the energetic first director of the Bureau d'Ethnologie, a political revolutionary, a government minister, and a diplomat.
