Amy Steadman is the young heiress of a prosperous children's book publishing franchise in New York. After her grandmother is murdered, apparently in a botched robbery, Amy goes to North Carolina to clean out the family home. But as she sorts through dusty files and boxes, she is haunted by the memory of her mother's suicide, which apparently happened here when Amy was only three.
