Research in Braille and Tactile Graphics

Friday, July 30, 2021

NNELS has been researching methods to create more efficient braille transcription and tactile graphics. In doing so, we have determined a need to create a navigable electronic braille file and shifted our research. NNELS is collaborating with Humanware, American Printing House for the Blind, and National Braille Press for this new file type. The EBRF will revolutionize not only how braille will be transcribed, but more importantly how it will be read, used, and accessed.

The goal of this project is to increase the availability of tactile resources available to the general public through Canadian Public Libraries and the NNELS repository for leisure. We wish to encourage users to create and explore tactile graphics and tactile art through the use of accessible tactile creation tools, and create a more equitable and dynamic way to access braille electronically.

We are excited to see where this research continues to take us!
