An ancient secret resurfaces when a murdered corpse shows up on Aloysius Pendergast's doorstep. The death has the hallmark of a perfect murder-save for a gem lodged in the victim's stomach, which leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine. He is soon caught in a wicked plot that may well end in his death.
