Two New Simultaneous Braille Releases Available Now

Tuesday, March 2, 2021

Two new print-braille books This is How I Know and Heat of the Lava Dragon celebrated their releases yesterday and are headed towards their host libraries.

This is How I Know features braille in both English and Ojibwe, includes image descriptions, and 4 tactile graphics for the changing of the seasons. Including tactile graphics in a picture book is a first for NNELS! House of Anansi/Groundwood Books, author Brittany Luby, along with transcriber Bonnie Read, and tactile graphics artist Warren Read really knocked it out of the park with this one! House of Anansi Press/Groundwood Books will be selling the print-braille for the same cost as its print counterpart on their website if anyone is interested in purchasing a copy. This is huge with respects to equity because the print-braille copies cost over $60 each to create.

Heat of the Lava Dragon is part of the best-selling Dragon Masters series by Tracy West, an early chapter book series aimed at newly independent readers. With easy-to-read text, high-interest content, and fast-paced plots, these books help boost reading confidence and stamina. Thanks to the author and Scholastic for making this simultaneous release possible!

These books were produced with support from the Government of Canada's Social Development Partnerships Program - Disability Component.
